Shayne is a senior lawyer with more than thirty years of experience advising clients in commercial, corporate, Indigenous governance, regulatory, and economic development matters. A member of Miawpukek First Nation and a resident of Conne River, Newfoundland and Labrador, Shayne has built a distinguished career spanning private practice, Indigenous leadership, public service, and business development.
Shayne holds a Bachelor of Arts from Memorial University of Newfoundland, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of British Columbia, and an MBA from Athabasca University. He was called to the Newfoundland and Labrador Bar in 1994 and was later appointed King's Counsel in recognition of his contributions to the legal profession and to public service.
During law school, Shayne took a two-year leave from his studies to serve as Chief of Miawpukek First Nation. Following his term as Chief, he continued in community service through numerous terms as a Councillor, helping guide governance, economic development, and community-building initiatives over several decades.
From 1994 to 2021, Shayne served as Director of Justice and Legal Affairs for Miawpukek First Nation, with responsibility for legal affairs, governance, community justice programs, and strategic negotiations. In that role he helped advance innovative initiatives in Indigenous governance, justice, child and family services, and economic development.
Shayne has extensive experience in Indigenous economic development, commercial fisheries, and major business transactions, advising Indigenous governments and development corporations on transactions, governance, fisheries development, and economic partnerships. He has served in leadership roles with organizations including MAMKA and Netukulimk Fisheries Limited and has been closely involved in the development of Indigenous-owned enterprises, strategic partnerships, and resource-based economic initiatives.
Among his most significant matters, Shayne represented and advised Miawpukek First Nation in connection with the Mi'kmaq Coalition's acquisition of a 50% ownership interest in Clearwater Seafoods, alongside Premium Brands Holdings Corporation. Valued at approximately $1 billion, the transaction was one of the most significant Indigenous-led business acquisitions in Canadian history.

Outside the practice of law, Shayne enjoys hiking Newfoundland's trails, boating, and spending time with his partner and their two dogs. He is also responsible for what he describes as a world-famous seafood chowder, a distinction that remains entirely self-proclaimed but rarely challenged.
